California, sunny California…. What am I doing here!?!? As you might have guessed the vacation was awesome. Started Friday evening here in Boston arriving in a rainy Los Angeles where Kathrin met me, and where we met the Mazda 5 for the week. The rental guy tried to convince us to take a Mustang instead for only $15 more a day, and it was VERY tempting. With the car picked up we went to Kathrin’s apartment with the insane landlord where I soon crashed, but first after some complains from the landlord that we “talked to loud”. Next day, better weather and a 380 miles drive. The drive was very interesting but not really entertaining. To use a GPS is sometimes “questionable”, especially on Hwy5 when it states follow this road for 250 miles and then turn left…. And that is a left turn that turned out to be a stay to the left and continue for 70 miles, horrible for the moral. Once in San Francisco after countless hours without turning and no end of the road neither in front of the car or in the rear mirror, we checked in at Holiday Inn. Parking is a nightmare but after getting rid of the car we went out eating, sushi in China town =). First thing Sunday morning we got a hop-on-hop-off ticket and went around in SF (Fisherman’s Wharf, Golden Gate bridge and Golden gate park). San Francisco also contained Alacraz, Muir Woods and more Golden gate bridge before heading south on Hwy1, which is really beautiful. “First stop” Ano Nuevo state park and the Elephant Seals, really impressive huge animals with the males weigh in at amazing 5,000 pound. Not perfect parents as the male is just protecting the females so that he is the first one to mate with them once the pups are driven away by the females. We did see some fighting, some mating and a lot of sleeping. The day ended in Santa Cruz after a sunset at the beach. The next day was more or less a straight drive south to LA and checking in at the hotel located at the airport. Maybe not a perfect location, but it was cheap! Next day we did LA (Sunset blvd, Hollywood blvd, Rodeo drive, Santa Monica blvd), unfortunately no Hollywood stars in sight. Saturday, early start and a new rental car and off to Joshua tree national park. That was so cool, like 20 degrees and had all… snow, cactuses, sand… just the drive there was great. The last day gave the best weather, so it was a day meant for the beach. Took the car to Venice beach and walked over to Santa Monica beach and back… It really sucked to get back to Boston that evening… from 25 degrees to below zero, not fun at all!
Thank you Kathrin for a great vacation… Naturally, I am now planning the next one and I think it will be hiking in Yellowstone in mid July…
I hope you all enjoy the pictures after reading all of this…
